[Editor's Note: Bat removal can be a definite headache without the right tools. To remove them, try using a bit of Bat-A-Way in the problem areas. You can pick some up at Yardiac.]

Genesee County, Michigan has a lot of bats! They thrive in Flint, Fenton, Flushing, Grand Blanc and Davison.

Some people are scared to death of bats. They creep many people right out. Even those of us that don’t mind dealing with bats are entitled to an increased pulse rate when one is flying around our bedroom at 2:00 in the morning!

I am a bat removal expert. I have taken bats out of living rooms, bedrooms, basements and kitchens, walls, and attics. I work all hours of the day (and night!) and have seen people move right out of their home because a bat is flying around inside.

Unless a lone bat has accidentally flown in the house through an open door or window, chances are it is living in the walls or attic. Somehow it got confused, followed a fresh air current, and wound up in the living quarters. As much as people try to convince themselves that it is the only bat living in their home, chances are very good that there are more where that one came from. As you probably know, bats are friendly creatures and usually live in colonies. One bat does not make a colony!

Bats do a lot of good. They eat gazillions of bugs and mosquitoes each year. They belong on the outside of your house. If you find one inside your home, you probably need to hire someone with expertise in Bat Removal.

Some Bat Control companies offer free inspections. Others charge for their time and expertise. I have found that nobody will take the time to drive to your house, take up to two hours doing a detailed inspection of every nook and cranny and gap in your house, and then not make that money up somewhere. Free is not always in your best interest.

Company A charges a flat fee for bat inspections. They inspect every inch of your home, inside and out. This takes considerable time and effort. When they are done they present you with an informative report on all the areas of your home that are being used by bats or are vulnerable to being used by bats. You know the exact damage that has been done by bats. You know what you need to do to get rid of the bats and to keep the bats away. You know what cleanup is recommended and health hazards that may have been created. You will be advised on how to get rid of the bats and what Company A charges for each service provided.

Company B agrees to give a free inspection. They get in their vehicle and drive to your house. They take time out of their day to give it to you. When they arrive, they do a once over around the exterior of the house. Rarely is a ladder used outside to actually look for the points of entry. Then they climb up into the attic. They find some bat guano and come down and declare that you have a colony living up there. They quote you a price to get rid of the bats. Most times these quotes are sky high. If they get one taker out of four inspections, they have made their money back for all the ‘free’ inspections. In the meantime, you are stunned with such a huge price and are no more knowledgeable about the bat situation than you were before you got your free estimate.

As you can probably tell, my wildlife control company charges for bat inspections. We guide homeowners through the bat removal process and encourage them to save money by taking our recommendations and implementing them. Sometimes homeowners opt to do it all themselves and we are happy to guide them every step of the way. Other times, homeowners want us to do all the work. Either way, because of the detailed inspection that we have provided, they know every gap in their house that will be sealed.

Getting bats out of houses isn’t rocket science. It is however a lot of work and takes time. If a bat has found its way inside your home, call a professional, get educated, and get the bats out!

[Editor's Note: Many people wonder how to get rid of bats in an attic. What you can try is sprinking some Bat-A-Way in your attic to drive them away. Pick some up at Yardiac and get it shipped right to your home.]

bats in your houseFinding bats in a house usually isn’t the problem for most people. Getting rid of them, however, can prove to be a completely different story. If you take the time to check out your entire home and watch for telltale signs of a bat infestation, though, finding them can be easy. For example, listen for weird noises at night, and watch for things that look out of place. Check your home for any gaps, even as small as inch in width, because bats can fit into very small spaces. Check your attic for bat guano, or droppings, to see if there is any evidence of a bat party going on in your attic.

If you do find bats in a house area such as an attic or your walls, you need to call a professional right away. You shouldn’t have a second thought or waste any time finding someone to come out and take care of the bat problem right away. It might seem like a little problem that isn’t bothering anyone, but bats can be very dangerous. They are known for biting, and people have even slept through bat bites before. That’s why you need to take a bat problem seriously so that you don’t wind up with rabies or another terrible disease because of having bats in the house.

Bats in a house might seem to be something that you can take care of eventually, but you need to get the problem resolved right away. Otherwise, you’ll be putting your family’s health and safety in jeopardy by letting bats cohabitate with you. Don’t waste your time and money on home remedies and DIY solutions, either, because even when these are effective it is only a temporary solution. You should never take on bat problems by yourself, because that can be very dangerous. If you don’t know how to handle bats or how they will react, leave them alone and call a professional.

Professional wildlife specialists and pest controllers know exactly what to do to remove bats in a house. They can work with you to inspect your home, find the problem, and fix it as quickly and effectively as possible. It is one investment that is definitely worth making, because getting rid of bats will improve the safety and health of your family. If you have had bats in a house, you need to make sure that you have professional clean up done after they have been removed, as well. Bat guano is filthy and full of bacteria. Even breathing the air around it can be dangerous. So when you come across bats in your house, call a professional right away.

[Editor's Note: There are not many ways to repel bats, but one effective method is by using an ultrasonic bat repeller like the Electronic Yard Fence. It creates a sonic barrier that keeps bats away without harming them. You can pick one up at Yardiac.]

humane way to get rid of batsThere are many different things to consider when it comes to bat proofing your home. You should take the time to think about what you want and need from a bat control service, as well as how serious you are about taking care of the bat problems in your home. Of course, if you’ve never had a bat problem, you might not think it is as big of a deal as people who have. Or perhaps you are aware of the seriousness of the issue and want to prevent your family from being affected by it before it happens.

There are many bat control services out there that can offer a variety of solutions for bat proofing and bat control. If you take the time to check out the different services, you shouldn’t have trouble finding what you need. Just make sure that you find a company that can offer all the assistance you need and that will work with you to make sure your home is bat proof enough that even Batman couldn’t breakthrough the barriers. You should never take bat control or preventative measures into your own hands, because you could make the situation worse or put your family in danger without the proper experience and knowledge.

If you’re looking for bat proofing that works, check out a company that offers referrals. They offer comprehensive bat removal and bat exclusion services that will get the bats out and keep them out for years to come. The services offered by the company should come with a guarantee, so that you can rest assured that bats will not get back into your house. After a few years, no one can guarantee that your home will stay bat-free, because age and wear can create new cracks and gaps that these little critters can find easily. Any gaps or cracks in your home to a pest looking for a place to live are like a neon sign on a hotel that you can see from across town.

Make sure your company offers free inspections and has a lot of experience in bat control and removal. You also need to determine that their bat proofing practices are completely humane and will offer you a way to ensure that your family is safe without hurting or compromising the safety of the bats involved. It’s not the fault of the bats that our homes are taking over their ecosystem, after all, so we simply need to encourage them to return to the outdoors and prevent them from getting into homes without hurting or killing them unnecessarily.

rodent critter control dallasHaving bats in your home is dangerous enough in and of itself. Having those bats leave their toxic droppings all over the place can add another level of danger to your family’s health and well being. That’s why it’s essential to take bat guano clean up very seriously. A little soap and water isn’t quite going to do the trick. You could use bleach or other household cleaners to kill the bacteria and clean up the mess, but you could still miss something that could make your family ill simply by breathing the air in your home.

What’s the best solution for bat guano clean up? Professional intervention is the most effective. Usually, when you work with a bat removal service or professional wildlife service, the cleanup process will be a part of their services that are included. If the company does charge it as an extra service, they will tell you about it up front, so that you have time to consider your options. However, when the health and safety of your family is the main concern, you might not be able to put a price tag on doing the right thing for them.

Bat guano clean up should always be done wearing a mask or other protective covering because the worst disease caused by bat guano comes from inhaling the spores. Histoplasmosis is a serious disease that can be fatal if not caught in time. The worst part is that your family members can get it without even knowing it, just from breathing the air in your home. This condition can cause serious lung problems for anyone who contracts it, which is why the cleanup of bat guano is such a serious matter.

Histoplasmosis that is obtained from inhaling spores in bat guano can be very dangerous. It causes eye problems, liver problems, skin issues, intestinal problems, and can even affect the bone marrow and adrenal glands. At any stage, it can go on to produce vision loss as a result of developing into an ocular disease. The disease can cause anemia, pneumonia, meningitis, mouth ulcers, and many more complications in overall health and wellbeing for those who contract it. When you think of all the dangers that can come from this one illness, you will likely want to make sure that it doesn’t affect your family. The best thing that you can do is to keep your family away from the guano and hire professionals to undertake the bat guano clean up effort.

[Editor's Note: Getting rid of bats effectively requires the right tools for the job. For indoor bat problems, you can try sprinking some Bat-A-Way around where the bats are hanging out. For outdoor relief, you can go for an ultrasonic bat repeller. Both are available at Yardiac.]

how to gt rid of batsBats, like most animals, follow the path of least resistance. They flourish in areas abundant in food, shelter, and the absence of predators. If you live in an area that is uniquely habitable for any particular species of bat, don’t be surprised if they try and move in.

Bats usually roost in dark, quiet, enclosed spaces where they are least likely to be disturbed by predators or inclement weather. Their natural habitats are caves and other such secluded areas and this is why your barn, shed or attic can be so attractive to a bat in search of safety. Some species are less picky and will roost in trees and dense foliage.

Bats roost for three reasons:

  1. To digest the night’s meal: After a long night of feeding, it’s not uncommon to spot a lone bat hanging from an awning or off a tree as it digests the night’s catch. Technically this is resting, not ‘roosting’.
  2. Hibernation: During the colder months, depending on your geographic location, bats will seek out secluded spaces with stable conditions to hibernate and wait out the cold season. They often roost in groups and make use of each other’s body heat to keep one another warm.
  3. Breeding: Bats will choose protected environments for the creation of nursery colonies. Nursery colonies are where female bats nurse their babies to self-sufficiency. It’s common for several hundred mother bats to share the same roost with each other creating a ‘colony’ of babies and mothers. Maternity season for bats in the United States and Canada is usually from late April to late August.

Bats can fit into openings as small as 1/23 making almost every man-made structure a virtual smorgasbord of potential hiding places. Some of the places that bats have been found in man-made structures include but are not limited to:

  • Attics
  • Storage sheds
  • Barns
  • Unused and open structures (Dog houses, stables, etc)
  • Chimneys
  • Louvers
  • Soffits
  • Siding
  • Eaves
  • Roof tiles and shingles
  • Behind shutters

What to do if You Encounter a Bat

Bats are relatively timid creatures that normally go out of their way to avoid contact with humans. This is why you should be extremely careful if you encounter one up close and personal. Less than 1/2 of a percent of bats carry rabies, but those that do are more likely to become sick or disoriented increasing their likelihood of coming into contact with someone. Of the few rabies cases reported each year in the U.S., over half of them are caused by bat bites, so be very cautious when in close proximity and do not handle the bat with bare hands.

Bat Bites

Bat bites aren’t always noticeable, they usually aren’t very painful so it’s possible for somebody to get bitten while they are sleeping or otherwise distracted. If you or anyone in your household has been exposed to a bat and you aren’t 100% sure that they weren’t bitten, it should be captured and brought with you to your doctor to be tested for rabies. This is especially important in the case of a child who is found with a bat as they may not admit to getting bitten or understand the potential risk. Don’t panic – rabies is still extremely rare, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?

Getting a Bat Out of Your House

If a bat wanders into your home through an open door or window, the best way to usher it out is to seal it off from the rest of the house by closing the doors to adjacent rooms and opening all of the windows in the room in which it resides. Just give it a few hours and it will usually leave all by itself. If it decides to stick around or you simply don’t have the patience to wait for it to leave, you can capture the bat and release it outside.

How to Capture a Bat

If you find yourself in a situation where you must capture a bat to either bring it to your doctor or release it outside of your home, the most important thing to remember is not to handle it with your bare hands. If you’re not particularly squeamish around bats then you can dawn a pair of heavy work gloves and use them to grab it and transport it out doors. A more agreeable method to those who would rather not get so close would be to take a small container such as a coffee can or shoebox, place it over the bat, and then slide a rigid piece of cardboard underneath to trap it in the container. You can then open the container outsi 1ff8 de to free the bat, or tape it shut (don’t forget air-holes) and bring it with you to your doctor if somebody may have been bitten.

Getting Rid of Bats in Structures

Before we begin the process of removing them from your property, you should check your local ordinances as it is illegal to disturb roosts, trap and/or kill bats in many areas. This guide will not tell you how to kill bats, but it will tell you how to get rid of them.

Where Are They Roosting?

If you’ve got bats living on your property and you want them out, the first thing you need to do is determine where they are roosting. Grab a chair and sit outside a few evenings with an eye to the sky. Are they in the trees? Around your house? Your neighbors houses? Make a list of every place they may be roosting based on your observation.

The next step is to go out during the day and examine closely all of the structures you’ve identified as possible roosting areas. Make a list of every opening larger than 1/23 in diameter and keep an eye out for telltale signs of bat habitation. You may notice dark, pellet-like droppings on walls and around areas where they roost as well as dark smudges and stains in places which they come into direct contact.

how to get rid of bats

Bat control tips and tricks on how the professionals do bat control, it is hard to explain bat control but I will try to explain it the best that I can. I hope this helps some of the readers on how to perform bat control.

The techniques used for bat control have nothing in common with the techniques generally used for varmints such as squirrels, raccoons, and other wild animals. Rather than using bat traps, bat control is handled using an organized exclusion plan. It is against the law to use poisons, and it is criminal in killing some bats. Analysis has demonstrated that bats will return from distances of up to one hundred fifty miles, so trapping and moving bats only produces a false sense of protection for homeowners who experience the bats captured and carted away.

The bat exclusion formula requires many steps.

The 1st step required is the observation of the building not long after sundown to locate the exit and entrance areas. This is executed on a moderately clear night, as rainy and breezy circumstances are not pleasing for bats to locate winged insects. The inspection night can be at any time during the fall, summer, or spring.

The 2nd step requires sealing off all openings, crevices, and holes, allowing the primary entree hole(s) exposed. This forbids the bats from detecting an alternate entree point into the building.

The 3rd step is to put in a unidirectional exclusion device that will allow the bats to depart their roost site but not come back into the building.

Bat abatement services are usually executed in late spring and early fall. Excluding the female bats on that period of time would produce a problem bigger than having the bats in your attic, as the adolescent bats would expire without their female parent to provide and care for them. The summertime inspections allow experts to be ready for exclusions once the suitable time approaches. In many cases the experts will execute much of the sealing off and fixes before the exclusion time of the year starts.

Bat exclusions can run from a couple of hundred to several thousand dollars depending upon the size of the building, equipment, materials for fixes, labor time for remedies and sealing off. The price for bat proofing changes greatly depending upon the combination of the previous factors. Some buildings could demand man lifts or other gear to execute bat exclusion and bat proofing. In some cases the main exit, and entrance holes are the only entree point’s visible, and standard repairs and exclusion could be adequate for a successful bat control.

Bat Inspections: This is to ascertain the bat species of the colony and if adolescent bats are existing, existing entrance points and possible re-entry points. The bat inspection step will allow a bat control expert to give the client a precise quote in bat proofing the entire building.

Bat Removal: Colony removal is attained with a device called an eviction device. This is a unidirectional door that will grant the bats the ability to go out of the building but, not come back into the building.

Bat exclusion is highly tiresome work. Bat control experts must work inside precise tolerances to provide success. They must be very detail minded and very careful. An unsuccessful person not properly sealing a inch crack can result in a failed bat exclusion.

Executing an inspection on a bat problem can be long, as the bat control expert closely inspects the whole outer construction. Doing an inspection demands every inch of the building to be checked thoroughly, from bottom to top. We scrutinize the roof tops and inspect the lower rooflines, along with all soffit to roof intersections on dormers, window frames, and other possible bat entry points.

Some insurance firms might cover bat exclusions, since they are not rodents, but it is getting less and less. Most householder’s policies won’t cover any mouse or squirrel (rodents) damage or removal, but because bats are not rodents getting hold of your insurance agent before exclusion is advised. Strangely enough, there are some insurance companies won’t cover the bat exclusion cost, but only will address the guano cleanup programs.

bat removal california

There are many different species of bats. However, you are not likely to spot many of these, as several are rare of endangered. They have good vision, and supplement it with echolocation in order to catch insects in the air. Their flight is excellent, and they have great control in the air. Their wings are made up of what are essentially arms and very long fingers with membrane stretched between. Bats use their hind feet to hang upside down. Some bats roost in trees and vegetation, but some bats like to form large groups and live inside buildings.

The bats that roost inside buildings, often in large numbers, can cause a number of problems. Some people are uncomfortable living with many of these creatures of the night. Even though bats are gentle animals, they do unfortunately carry diseases, and like all animals, produce waste. Many buildings are befouled with the very strong odor of bat droppings and urine. Worse than the odor, these droppings are a bio-hazard to the building they are in. Fungus often grows on the droppings the spores of which can cause lung diseases in people. Bats can also carry a number of parasites, and of course are one of the animals known to carry and transmit rabies.

Bats may look large when they fly, but they can squeeze into, and prefer to squeeze into, very small gaps, usually of less than an inch, and as little as 3/8 inch. They usually stay year round, but sometimes migrate, and then the entire colony returns every year to the same area, and grows larger and larger. These colonies can eventually reach several thousand members.

Bat control work should not be attempted by amateurs. Most bat elimination systems ensure that all of the bats are safely removed from the building, and that they will never return. Many ignorant pest control companies attempt to do bat work, and they often resort to illegal, inhumane, and ineffective methods to try to solve the problem, such as the use of "bat poison", or simply sealing them in a building to die and stink without safely getting them out first. They are very valuable animals. They only give birth to one or two young a year depending on species, they live up to 20 years, and they eat thousands of insects a night. They are not lowly creatures, and should be treated with respect.

Do not try to pick up a bat yourself, particularly if it is lethargic or looks sick – this is often how rabies is transmitted. A bat in a house can bite a person, and its teeth are so small, the person might not even wake or know about it.

Some bats are protected in many states and should never be killed or harmed. Harming a protected bat carries severe fines and possibly jail time!

If you have a bat colony roosting inside of your building a bat control professional should be contacted to assess the situation and give an estimate for a removal and exclusion program. As with any animal living inside your home or office special care and proper knowledge is required to safely and humanely remove bats from within the structure.

Bats are territorial and they will normally stay in your area once they have been excluded. If the building has not been properly sealed, the bats will enter another opening in the same building. Bats only need an opening that is inch by 1 inch, the thickness of a standard number two pencil.

Bat control is a unique field. It requires specialized training and techniques, attention to detail, and extensive knowledge of bat biology and behavior.

Effective bat control requires a full site inspection, and 100% of the structure must be properly sealed, including gaps as small as " wide. Once the bats are removed exclusion work must be done to prevent the bats from returning to the roost site. If pesticides are used for bat control, the applicator would be in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and possibly subject to a $25,000 fine.

After the bats have been removed from a structure proper clean-up of the bat guano is the next step. After a few years, the old guano that has accumulated may develop and grow a fungal spore. If the guano is not properly removed occupants of the building may subject themselves to possible contraction of histoplasmosis.
